Church of Santa Maria

The ancient parish church of Tossignano

← Back to History and Places

Historical Notes

Erected in the 5th century, the parish church was dedicated to the Madonna and stood outside the castle walls, near the fortress. It was the ancient parish church of Tossignano, the parish seat until the 16th century.

Having fallen into ruin in the 16th century, in 1605 the parish was transferred to the church of San Michele, which thus became "Parish of S. Maria in S. Michele". When the parish church fell into disuse, the Company of Santa Maria concentrated its activities in the oratory built behind the town hall.

Documents of great value were preserved in the Santa Maria archive, including papal and episcopal bulls, statutes, and ancient accounting. Unfortunately, with the destruction of the village in 1945, most of these documents were lost. A bull from the Bishop of Imola Pietro degli Omodei dated November 3, 1449, testifies that a religious company of lay people dedicated to the Madonna had existed in Tossignano since time immemorial.

Place of Devotion

The church of Santa Maria represents the heart of Marian devotion in Tossignano, with a history dating back to the 5th century. The Company of Santa Maria, documented as early as 1449, represented the fulcrum of the lay religious life of the village since time immemorial.

The hospice of Santa Maria, which was located behind the town hall, preserved precious community documents for centuries, testimony to the importance of this place of worship in the history of the village. Today the church continues to represent a reference point for Marian devotion in the territory.
